Okay, who doesn't love puff pastry? Furthermore, who doesn't love a quick 25-minute appetizer with puff pastry?! Well, here it is. This Pear and Gorgonzola Puff Pastry is SO good. It's easy to make, quick, and doesn't involve any special techniques. I mean, you may need to run out and get gorgonzola cheese, but it's at mostly all supermarkets. Anyway, this recipe is nothing more than a sheet of puff pastry, 2-3 pears, about a ½ cup of gorgonzola cheese, topped with pecans, honey, and thyme. It's absolutely delicious. Best of all, all you have to do is add these ingredients on top of the puff pastry and then bake it!

You may be wondering - did I make this puff pastry or did I purchase this at the store? Spoiler alert - I definitely purchased this puff pastry at my local grocer - Balducci's! Also, comice pears are in season so I HAD to use them in this recipe! I love pears and how they pair so well with gorgonzola. It's like the best of both worlds - sweet and savory. And when you add the puff pastry and pecans and honey and thyme on top, it's just such a beautifully flavored appetizer.

Also, this is technically vegetarian too. I try my best to make recipes that are easily customizable for everyone's diet. This recipe can be made just about every which way except gluten free, unless you make your own. So, if you omit the gorgonzola and add a vegan cheese and swap out honey for maple syrup, this is automatically vegan! (Puff pastry is naturally vegan!) If you make your own gluten free puff pastry, this automatically becomes gluten free! If you need to make this recipe dairy free, you can omit the cheese entirely and it's still SO good!

which is better? store bought puff pastry or homemade?

Okay, this is a HUGE debate. Let's settle it! Homemade puff pastry is DELICIOUS, but extremely labor intensive and a huge time commitment. Store bought puff pastry is already made, just as flaky, and still super delicious! A lot of store bought puff pastry sheets use oil as opposed to butter, making it automatically vegan but still maintaining that buttery flavor and flakiness. When made at home, you're getting the butter and the satisfaction of making your own.

After a few years of making my own puff pastry, I have come to the conclusion that store bought is best. Yes, I said it! As a baker, a cook, a person who just loves food and to eat - store bought puff pastry is KING! There's really no need to make your own puff pastry unless you really just love making your own puff pastry lol.

gorgonzola or blue cheese?

A lot of people actually confuse these two cheeses! Blue cheese is a bit more sour in taste and is a French cheese. To make this cheese, penicillium is added to give the cheese its blue color. Gorgonzola on the other hand is an Italian cheese. It's made from cow's milk and it a lot milder in taste. It's smoother. I like using gorgonzola in everything for this reason alone. I find that it adds a nice bite in sharpness but is still smooth and enjoyable.

when are pears in season?

Typically pears are in season from mid to late Summer well into the Spring! So, enjoy them while you can! Comice pears are my personal favorite and always remind me of the holidays. Harry and David boxes were always gifted to us as children from my parent's companies. They're super juicy and full of sweetness. I just love them! Hence as to why when I saw these at Balducci's, I picked them up and make this recipe!
