Honey Za'atar Chicken with Chickpeas is such a delicious recipe. It's full of flavor, is super easy to make, and only takes about a half hour from start to finish! I love this recipe because it's so easy! Between the beautiful caramelization that the honey gives the chickpeas and the delicious za'atar seasoning, this chicken dish is phenomenal. In addition, the also gives the chicken a beautiful golden hue and a slightly sweet taste when roasted in the oven.

I cannot wait for you to try this recipe. We're currently in that weird stage between Summer and Fall. I honestly don't know whether to eat pumpkins or watermelons. So, I've been doing my own thing until I see the trees changing. I have SO many fun ideas coming up for Fall. However, until then, this recipe is definitely more than enough to hold us all over.

have your ever tried za'atar?

Have you ever tried za'atar? Za'atar is a Mediterranean spice that is SO delicious. It consists of thyme, coriander, cumin, cumin, sesame seeds, sumac, and salt. Of course I believe there are variations of the spices, however, this is what I've known to be in za'atar. (Please correct me if I'm wrong!) I've eaten za'atar with so many things, so when I wanted to try it with chicken, it only make sense that I add a little honey!

In the Fall, I typically enjoy a little toast for breakfast and I always love to have za'atar with a little labneh and olive oil and garlic on my toast. When I was cooking one evening for dinner, I was thinking of ways to incorporate za'atar into a chicken dish. I literally pulled together this recipe in about 25 minutes, on a whim, and we could NOT stop eating it.

I went to my pantry and literally grabbed my favorite spice

I went to my pantry and literally grabbed my favorite spices, za'atar being one of them and got to work. A little smoked paprika, salt, pepper, and za'atar goes a long way in the flavor department. This is such a simple chicken dish, but once you try it, you'll wonder how it got so flavorful with so few ingredients. It's literally magical.

Also, you should be able to find it at your local grocery store! If you are having difficulty finding it, I highly recommend purchasing here.

how do you make Honey za'atar chicken with chickpeas?

Let's talk about this recipe. I've been looking for something different to do with chicken. I felt a bit stumped as to what to do with chicken. So many chicken recipes have become mundane, so I decided to spice it up. Literally. I added together honey and smoked paprika and grabbed the za'atar. It was AMAZING.

Also, I love chickpeas. So I decided to open a can of chickpeas and swirl it around in the marinade. Then I roasted them with chicken and WOW - it was SO good.

So you start by adding the seasonings to the chicken and then brown on both sides in a skillet. Place chicken on a baking sheet and add the chickpeas along with it. Add roughly chopped red onions. In a small saucer combine honey, garlic cloves, and lemon juice and the pour it all over the chicken, chickpeas, and red onion on the baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes and you're done! I chose to garnish with a little dill (as in the pictures) but this is totally optional. I just love fresh herbs because they add another layer of flavor to everything!

Also, I highly recommend eating this recipe with labneh, as it goes to well with the flavors featured in this dish. If you don't have time, you can always purchase labneh in stores as well! (Side note - home made is WAY better!)

Okay, enough rambling, let's make Honey Za'atar Chicken with Chickpeas!

This recipe is soooo delicious. We’ve made it multiple times and the blend of flavors is fantastic, between the spices, honey, and garlic. YUM. Also ridiculously easy to make. Thank you for sharing this with us!

So incredibly delicious! Loved the sweetness of the honey chickpeas with the flavor of the zaatar on the chicken. I used boneless skinless thighs, and cooked the chickpeas and onions for a few extra minutes while I seared the chicken, then put the chicken on the baking sheet and baked for 14 minutes. So good and definitely will be making this on repeat!!

My family loved this dish. I used 8 thighs, and the amount of sauce still worked just fine. Paired well over plain couscous. Will make again.

  5. I had to look at the pictures to figure out if the chicken thighs were bone in or not because I didn’t want to mess up cooking times. Went with bone in and the timing was perfect!! My boyfriend and I loved this dish. It was a perfect, easy cleanup dinner for a lazy Sunday. So flavorful! Will definitely be making this again.

This recipe delivers what it promises both on flavor and easiness I wanted to try it for a while but never since I had never cooked with this middle eastern spice Zaatar so I held off.
The spice blend is wonderful, warm and the sweetness of the honey with garlic and lemon juice brings it to another level. We loved it and not just saying it, will be a keeper for sure. When it comes to easiness, I did it at my lunch hour and having lined the sheet pan with foil (yes I am that girl) it was a breeze. Please give it a try you wont be disappointed.

  8. This looks amazing. Quick question though. Do you think date syrup would be a successful substitution for the honey?
    Thanks,

    • Perhaps a maple syrup would suffice! It would have a deeper sweet taste but I think it would be equally delicious!

  9. 5 stars
The amount of flavor on the chicken was INSANE! My whole family loved it and I was able to use up the za'atar I had in my pantry.
